Secret AOL Knowledge

Let’s ponder about why so much knowledge is “secret” in the Art of Living. Not just the techniques, that people are told to sign contracts of non-disclosure towards, before learning. But also the secret knowledge that only the chosen few are privileged enough to hear from the Guru, in private settings or at Teacher’s Refreshers Courses.

The official bullshit explanation is that “higher knowledge” can be dangerous to people who are not yet ready to assimilate it. In their ignorance they will misunderstand it, and it will lead them astray. You need to be properly devoted and humble to the Guru, and of course your “system” needs to be “cleansed”, in order for it to handle the extreme amount of “shakti” that the knowledge contains.

A much more plausible explanation is that the so-called higher knowledge is so absurd that no-one will believe it without some preliminary brainwashing, after which it is handed out in small morsels to the ever-hungry devotee, who gobbles it up, thinking that the Guru’s insane ramblings are the Word of God. Secret Knowledge becomes a way of controlling the devotees; I remember clearly the Teacher’s Refresher Meetings where senior teachers would ask us to please cultivate our minds and stop asking questions, so that the guru would start giving secret, sacred knowledge. Never did anyone ask the guru this simple, scientific question: How Do You Know?

If knowledge -even absurd, clearly wrong knowledge- is power, then AOL and RS are clearly abusing that power. Enough now, with secret knowledge. Information wants to be free! Let’s deflate that insane AOL bubble of privileged bullshit information.

Yes. I too believe in free sharing of knowledge. After all….. it them who say in the course that if knowledge is held on tightly it will decay……. so we have to share. I am desperately looking for the whole kriya file. What I feel is that the base of AOL is yoga…… and that is what I am after. So please help.

You clearly do not understand the nature of consciousness. Einstein once said, you can not solve the problem with the same level of consciousness that created it in the first place.
This implies truth changes according to the level of consciousness you are in.
Meditating, asanas, silence etc. are all tools to awaken you. When you are in that “state” the knowledge you receive goes much much deeper. This is not just AOL stuff. Its a well known fact in all spiritual traditions. Even Jesus went out in the desert and fasted for a long time purifying himself.

The only reason AOL is holding back on some knowledge and only releasing it at certain times is to keep the sacredness of it intact and to make sure the receiver is ready to see the beauty of the teachings on a soul level. Not possible after a heavy metal concert and Big Macs dude. Wake up.

But I guess you just WANT to see flaws everywhere. cool with me.

    Peace

    Really?

Then Ramana Maharishi, Ramakrishna Paramhamsa, Vivekananda and Nisargdatta Maharaj must have been very perverted people. Because they shared their knowledge openly without any fees and without caring to keep the sacredness intact!

There you go my friend ! Don’t you know that all the people you mentioned- from Ramana Maharishi to Vivekananda and Nisargadatta Maharaj et al, did have certain secret techniques which they did not teach to everybody ?

Need proof ? Read the writings and talks of these people. Everybody has talked about certain esoteric Yoga techniques that are taught only to the very advance disciples. Vivekananda openly said that Sri Rama Krishna taught him techniques different from those he taught his other disciples.

OK. So in your opinion, “very advanced” disciples mean those who can spend money? Because that is the only criteria your guru uses to decide whom to give “knowledge”. If you have $$$ in your pocket, you are eligible for all and every AOL course, otherwise not.

      • September 2, 2010 3:45 am

Advanced as in “I’m actually stupid enough to pay your for bullshit knowledge”. You want knowledge, go read a calculus book, study physics or a real science. Sitting around meditating hoping that one day you will receive some divine revelation of consciousness rooted in the sacred shakra of kundalini chi bullshit will actually get you in an even worse state of consciousness when you figure out that you have to rewire your brain to think rationally after so much effort or self brainwashing.

I live in slums. I studied upto 10th standard with my hard work. And yes, I did a free course that Art of Living provided in slums. I am proud to say that now I am motivator for many youngsters.

Thanks to Art of Living. If I had money, I would give it to this great cause. But, Art of Living never stopped me from doing any course, because I had no money. It’s just I had to do walk some extra steps to get scholarship. But again it’s my karma burning process, so all great 🙂

I thoroughly agree with Joshua dharma, the problem that most people have is mixing up various levels of consciousness, taking truth from a lower level and applying it to a higher level and vice versa. Imagine, would anyone in an interview, if asked, “where do you think you’ll be in the next 5 years” give an answer, “I’ve always been here and will continue to be here”. I hope you guys see what I mean.

Get real and post here only if you have balanced views about genuine experiences you’ve had and NOT observations that are not your own in the first place.

But people- all peolpe in the wide world should realize that AOL is not a charity group who shares spiritual thruth, it’s just fraud thing =(

Secrecy can also be the origin of loyalty.

I’ve worked one year full time for Art of Living, and did my first YES+ course a few months before that. I was part of the first Yes We Can project and it was a great experience as in, meeting a lot of nice people inside and outside of AoL. But other than that my scepticism grew because of many factors, from how the organization deals with certain situations (‘accidents’), to how they treat people who don’t fit their profile, and of course, Sri Sri himself.

I remember at one point he was telling us some knowledge. I raised my hand and criticized his claims to which he said something along the lines of “you need to listen better”. I must say I was quite disappointed in that answer, especially because he’s supposed to be an ascended master. Is he ascended? I don’t know, and I don’t care.

What I do know is that I did a Vipassana course earlier this year, a few months ago, and this was exactly what I would describe as a sincere spiritual experience without any bullshit. It’s totally charitable, being free of charge, on donation basis. Anyway, I just want to say that if you’re with AoL and feel disappointed, then don’t be afraid to leave it behind. There are true teachings out there, and techniques that will show their benefit immediately.

And let’s not pretend that AoL isn’t good for anything. I would just suggest not to get entangled too much with the organization, but if you just did a few courses, then I think you had a nice experience, and then just leave it at that. AoL starts nice, but never goes deeper than the superficial. This way you keep looking for something that you simply won’t find in AoL. People practice for years, but nothing really changes. You gotta live your life, don’t get stuck; not in AoL and for that matter anything else.

Yes, most people here are are on the same page as you, with this. However, I can also see that people want to go further and provide a supportive forum here, for those who did not “just leave it at that” in Aol and went in much further, then got used and abused. Hello – I am 32 years old and just coming into contact with AOL for the very first time in my life. I have gone to 2 sessions of the 45 min long recorded chanting meditation and 1 session of the 1 hr long basic yoga course. Both of these have been free sessions, but I have received heavy constant pressure to pay to take the main intro class. They said they would give it to me for $200.00 instead of the usual $250.00, I told them I was very poor, which I am, and I asked if they had a scholarship program, he then got back to me and told me that he would let me sign up for $125.00 but I had to sign up by tomorrow night or that rate would expire, again much pressure to sign now. I have been a long time practicer of yoga and I like the yoga and breathing at the AOL classes, but before I almost signed up tonight I thought I would look around on the internet for some more info about AOL and I found tons of negative revues. I was never happy or feeling good about blindly paying that much money and I’m not planning on paying any money now, but I may try to go to some more free classes if they will allow me. Does anyone have any advice for me in relation to my brand new dealings with AOL and can someone link me to all of the breathing and yoga of AOL without me having to pay for it? I really like breathing exercises and yoga practices and would like to acquire more of them if anyone is willing to share. Thank You all so much for your postings very enlightening. Peace!

Attend the Satsangs.. which are free.. In the satsang .. just close ur eyes and meditate … though there is a risk of being bombarded with a lot of Sales pitches in the Satsang….
But still if you are aware then its okay.. and Satsangs offer a nice place of meditation

There are some CDs called Sukshama Vyayaama which have over 100 techniques of Yoga which are very powerful and take around 40 Minutes…

Also there is a Sri Sri Yoga CD which has about 40 minutes of yoga ….. Breathing exercises are quite good..

You can buy some of the guided meditation CDs etc or obtain a copy from somebody who is in aol…

Many of the benefits of the courses probably are over hyped…

      The content is good…

You can learn Suryanamaskaars and many basic pranayaams & bandhas kapalbhaati, alternate nostril breathing, from the net itself….

Remember more important than the technique is the commitment, regularity and the sincerity with which you practice… So just develop a set of techniques which suit you..

Usually yoga practitioners follow this sequence(commonly)

      – Hatha Yoga
      – Mantra Chanting
      – Pranayaams & Bandhas
      – Meditation

So you can choose a few techniques and form a sequence….. also always listen to your body…

God sees your sincerity and not your bank balance…

Also there is this technique from Paramhansa Yogananda which is called Kriya Yoga.. check that out if it suits you…

Whatever path you follow the eight limbs of Yoga always remain the same no matter if you do Sudarshan Kriya or not….

Yam, Niyam, Asana, Pranayaama, Pratyahaara, Dhyaan, Dharana, Samadhi

Follow these as a thumb rule… and you will always be on the right track…

I don’t know where are you from? If you are from India, the art of living courses including Sudarshana Kriya is taught “free of cost / with very nominal fee” in hundreds of slum areas, prisons, villages and many more places. If you are really poor, you can go to any slums and do this course.

Oh, come on! I have seen them conducting AOL courses at Dharavi. No kriya/ pranayama is taught there. What they teach in so called free courses in slums and villages is chanting and bhajans. May be they teach the basic course in prisons (assuming that some newspaper correspondent is present). Most of the people would not like to go to prison to learn kriya, IMHO.

Supplementing Prakash…these courses are undertaken by volunteers out of their own funds as part of Seva. AOL does not incur any Capital Expenditures on such projects. No money seems to be transferred from Bangalore to other destinations.

      1. What they teach is not Yoga…not even Hatha Yoga

      2. Yoga is not about breathing and meditating….if you don’t even know the purpose, what would you meditate on???What is your aim?

      3. Any person,if he is asking money or anything in reward for what they teach(spiritual),is not a Yogi, you are definitely not fit to receive instructions from him.Don’t waste your time and money.

      4. If you want to learn the Yoga that you know(may be breathing, pranayama, few exercises and pointless meditation) you can pay the same amount of money where they teach Hatha Yoga.Be precise…know what you want and seek it where it is to be found sincerely.

      5. Is this all you want in life???To be a healthy person….doing pranayama, breathing exercises???Liking is one thing, the Truth is something very different,my friend.

      6. There is no short cut to anything. Why is there this running away from the real Yoga that is mentioned in the Bhagavad Gita and other scriptures towards these idiots who promise shortcuts to freedom and Truth???Yes,…accept it….because we are too afraid to face the Truth, because we want to have things easy without any effort from our side, may because we want to find consolation in the common opinion and society…

Ultimately,it is vulnerable people like these who become victims to such fake hypocrites.
Try to know truth for its own sake.Know what you are looking for and honestly seek it as early as possible in life.Life will not be the same thing the next moment.Know the purpose of life before you are too old to even move your leg. These vain arguments over trivial things is only sucking precious energy and time out of us.
Know the purpose and meaning of life. And to know it you must know that all these meditation, etc are the means…Don’t fool yourself any longer for time is fleeting….

As much as I may despise AOL – it’s true that there is no free lunch. Especially, when it comes to yoga – it’s better to pay $$ and learn from a professional. There are many organizations which teach techniques – and even they expect some sort of contribution monetary or otherwise.

AOL vultures don’t get distracted by such petty reasons.

I have seen them convincing immigrant Indian students in US universities, surviving hand to mouth on scholarship money, to pay for AOL courses. I have seen their star marketers convincing students to even forgo their medical insurance and rather give it to AOL. One gentleman even assured to these students that once they started regular kriya, they would not need help of a doctor anyway.

i agree, if you find some genuine spiritual places they are open handed with their charity towards all, including food and lodgings.

for instance in my cult (prem rawat cult as its now called) you never ever are given free food even. you have to pay. but leaving the cult i realised that genuine spiritual communities are not like this.
food, lodgings are provided but not as a means to make money out of the student.

genuine spiritual communities provide much much more and give back much much more then these greedy cults.

and where you are treated well, you will automatically give back without even being asked. thats why these communities are still going strong while the fakes disappear after a while.

People here are not focusing on money per se. They are focusing on money taken by AOL on false claims of charity.

Earning money is not a crime. Earning money by deceiving others is something else. There would not have been any issues if Ravi Shankar simply said that he had invented a technique that he wanted to sell @ so many $$$ per person. In that case any questions about his personal wealth or the size of Bhanu’s diamonds or the stock holdings of Mr. Narsimhan and his sons would have been irrelevant.

Instead, what this conman does is to tell people that the money charged is for charity. Thus he avoids tax and is able to persuade people to pay much higher than they would be otherwise willing. Tell us what makes this scam a holy cow that should be kept exempt from making a fuss?

Funnily enough, I actually feel sorry for you, and for all the other AoL teachers. Deep down inside, most of you are sincere people, however you have been conditioned to behave in a certain way and what you and others have written on this blog is clear evidence of this.

I have many friends like you who have been led to believe so many lies, who believe they are carrying out God’s work and saving the planet, and who assume that everybody who isn’t in AoL is deeply unhappy, stressed, beneath AoL, and needs to be converted to AoL.

If you read these blogs carefully, you will discover a great deal of truth contained within them. But because of your conditioning, your mind will do its best to deny everything. I really hope you manage to wake up from the AoL-inflicted delusion you are under and begin to experience real life as the rest of us, without any lies, without any nonsense, without any abuse, and with free minds and open hearts.

An aol manager personally told me that sri sri chucked a girl out of ashram cos she was found in a senior teachers room ,, but he did everything to keep the senior teacher in the faculty , becasue the senior teacher is blessed witht he gift of speech ,, he can handle sri sri s work , he knows how to mesmerise minds and make everyone think he’s enlightened , we need to be careful with people that have the gift of speech .
This girl was reprimanded by sri sri and chucked out of the ashram , when the senior teacher had coaxed her to come to his room , and obviously brainwashed her , she was a college going kid .. but this senior teacher was giving a palatial suite in the ashram .. this has completely changed my view abt srisri ,, no man of god would play such dirty politics, the ashram manager himself was shocked , he never knew why the girl was chucked out and nothing happened to the teacher . The master himself claimed that the teacher had done this with many girls , yet he keeps him near ,, something is not right guy ,s wake up wake wake up anyone meditating has siddhies he he can mesmerise your mind , does not mean he’s good or pure , sri sri involves himself in a lot of rubbish and games which no good soul could do , all these poor girls cant take a stand or speak up , because at the end of the day they will lose face ,, but u all wake up

I don’t exactly have a problem when two adults and consensual sex….but at least Ravi should stick to his own words.

      http://www.merinews.com/article/sri-sri-ravi-shankars-statement-on-swami-nithyananda/15805253.shtml

“Only a house holder is entitled for tantric sex. Claiming to be a monk and using so many people for one’s pleasure is unpardonable,” Ravi Shankar said.

“He should have had one partner and announced himself as a tantric guru. It has caused damage to the faith of people in the institution and traumatised many.”

That’s why its needs a patent.

Yoga teachers all over the world….

BTW AOL has falsely claimed that they have patented this hotch potch breathing technique called sudarshan kriya. There is no such patent ever filed. As usual your guru ravishankar was lying.
With many people coming out with the harmful effects of hyperventilation your guru is doing every trick in the book of conmen to create a smokescreen.

Peace!
    +1

A blogger who helped create sites that criticized the organization Art of Living as an “abusive cult” may remain anonymous for now, a federal judge has ruled.

U.S. District Court Judge Lucy Koh rejected the argument that the critic, who went by the name Skywalker, should lose his anonymity for allegedly infringing copyright by publishing secret training manuals. Skywalker allegedly posted the confidential pamphlet Breathe Water Sound Manual online.

Koh ruled that Skywalker was entitled to the same types of protection as political commentators, despite the Art of Living’s claims that Skywalker violated its intellectual property rights. “The speech at issue here merits First Amendment protection,” Koh wrote.

“Skywalker’s condemnation of the organization is clearly a matter of public interest,” the judge added. Contrary to plaintiff’s assertions, evidence of copyright infringement does not remove the speech at issue from the scope of the First Amendment.”

But Koh also said that Skywalker could later be unmasked, depending on how the legal proceedings progress. He has filed a motion for summary judgment, but if he is unsuccessful, the Art of Living can renew its request to unmask him, Koh ruled.

Skywalker helps operate the WordPress-hosted blog “Beyond the Art of Living,” which says its purpose is to support former Art of Living “members.” That blog, along with the Google-hosted “Leaving the Art of Living,” characterize the organization founded by Sri Sri Ravi Shankar as a “manipulative and abusive cult,” according to Koh’s opinion.

Last November, the Art of Living sued Skywalker as well as “Klim” (the operator of “Leaving the Art of Living”) for defamation, trade libel, copyright infringement and disclosing trade secrets. The defamation and libel claims were dismissed in June, but not the copyright infringement and trade secret claims.

The gist of those accusations is that the blogs published “highly confidential” material about the Art of Living’s “processes for teaching Sudarshan Kriya&rdquo” — described in court papers as a rhythmic breathing exercise that “incorporates specific natural rhythms of breath to release stress and to bring the mind to the present moment.”

The organization also sought a court order requiring the blog hosts — Automattic and Google — to turn over information that would identify Skywalker and the operator of “Leaving the Art of Living.”

U.S. District Court Magistrate Judge Harold Lloyd ruled in August that the organization could learn the identity of Skywalker because he admitted publishing the material — but not that of Klim. Skywalker challenged that order to Koh, who reversed the ruling. The case drew the attention of digital rights groups including the Electronic Frontier Foundation, ACLU and Public Citizen, who filed a friend-of-the-court brief on Skywalker’s behalf.

The fact “that a plaintiff alleges copyright infringement is no more reason to grant discovery of a speaker’s identity than the fact that a plaintiff may allege defamation, or trademark infringement, or tortious interference with business expectancies, or disclosure of confidential information in breach of an employment agreement, or invasion of privacy or computer fraud and abuse,” the groups argued. “It is all too easy to bring a bogus intellectual property claim and hence out a critic.”

You people are making fool of yourself. If you had put some effort in making your own lives then u wont be having time to pollute the image of a an organisation and for ur reason for being anonymous itself showed that u all are cowards. I u really r doing something good for others then why to hide yourself. And above all if u r so much concerned about saving the people from so called “aol trap” and do social service then y b concerned about legal matters. Its just becoz u noe u r doing a wrong and unlawful activity.

I do understand your frustration. It happens in life at times that we judged things wrongly.

I did my first Art of Living course in jail. They had free workshop in jail. I am an educated person, but had to go to jail for some personal reason.

Art of Living really helped me a lot during my stay in jail. Later, after coming out of prison I did some more advance programs offered by Art of Living. They cost me some money, but was reasonable compared the way economy is going. And I believe I still owe them a lot.

It’s not about money dude. What will you do with all this money? Give it to someone who can make the difference :).

If you are not willing to pay for something good, then the only way you can get it for free is either you go to jail or stay in slums, which I don’t recommend!!!! I believe in Prison and Slums Art of Living is offered for free. Art of Living also conducts many service projects. Art of Living has adopted 1000s of villages and has uplifted many lives. They also run school for kids. These kids are the first generation in their family who are going to school. Art of Living provides them free books, uniforms and education along with yoga & meditation.

Thank you for you good job Sri Sri Ravi Shankar. I highly appreciate yours and your volunteers efforts.

      Rajendra Seth,

It appears you’re pretty new to Art of Living and are going through your honey moon with the organization. Enjoy while it lasts. But beware, don’t get yourself brainwashed and fall into the trap. Have you ever tried questioning these numbers they provide? Just observe their response if you ever do so.

I have conducted programs in jails when I was part of AOL and I agree many of the transformations have been very encouraging. But the problem is that all these transformations based on a momentary feel good factor, followed by loads of hype, do not last long, because they are not based on solid foundations in yoga or vedanta. If some of these ‘transformed’ individuals pursue the ‘path’ after they come out of jail, they have to depend heavily on the organization and soon they are sucked in as volunteers or BWS (Navachetna Shibir, or may be some other name these days) teachers, who are typically treated as second class citizens in the unwritten AOL class system. Some who can endure all this continue with false hopes till they have no other option left in life other than living in the fake AOL world. Others who escape, fall back into their old life style and very often end up back in jail. So it is typically not a happy ending for these ‘transformed’ individuals. They lose their physical freedom when they are imprisoned while they lose their mental freedom when they get sucked into AOL. Difficult to decide which is worse, right?

    Hi,
I always say there are two best professions in India: Politician and Baba. There are plenty of people in India, who can be cheated very easily by these two.
If you look at Yoga history, 10 types of yoga methods(Raja Yoga, Hatha Yoga etc..) over thousands of years effort by millions of sages to arrive at the essence of yoga, what you are seeing today.

How can someone in 10day’s of silence can find a kriya?? Which wasn’t there in yoga. Just ask a question to yourself before starting any kriya. Forceful breathing is not recommended in yoga.. Only in certain situations, yes but with lot of cautions.
