So Ham, So Fake

July 13, 2010

The Long Sudarshan Kriya can easily be downloaded in mp3 format, for instance here or here. A note, though: downloading copyrighted material is illegal. As owners of this blog, we hereby state that we have not copied and distributed the Kriya. Readers of the blog have found the links, and made us aware of their existence. We also wish to point out that the Kriya tape seems to be easily copied, contrary to the beliefs in the Art of Living, that said action would be impossible, due to the Guru’s “grace” or “shakti”.

I am sure the AOL lawyers will do their best to shut down the free Kriya downloads. In the mean time, let’s ponder about why so much knowledge is “secret” in the Art of Living. Not just the techniques, that people are told to sign contracts of non-disclosure towards, before learning. But also the secret knowledge that only the chosen few are privileged enough to hear from the Guru, in private settings or at Teacher’s Refreshers Courses.

The official bullshit explanation is that “higher knowledge” can be dangerous to people who are not yet ready to assimilate it. In their ignorance they will misunderstand it, and it will lead them astray. You need to be properly devoted and humble to the Guru, and of course your “system” needs to be “cleansed”, in order for it to handle the extreme amount of “shakti” that the knowledge contains.

A much more plausible explanation is that the so-called higher knowledge is so absurd that no-one will believe it without some preliminary brainwashing, after which it is handed out in small morsels to the ever-hungry devotee, who gobbles it up, thinking that the Guru’s insane ramblings are the Word of God. Secret Knowledge becomes a way of controlling the devotees; I remember clearly the Teacher’s Refresher Meetings where senior teachers would ask us to please cultivate our minds and stop asking questions, so that the guru would start giving secret, sacred knowledge. Never did anyone ask the guru this simple, scientific question: How Do You Know?

If knowledge -even absurd, clearly wrong knowledge- is power, then AOL and RS are clearly abusing that power. Enough now, with secret knowledge. Information wants to be free! Post as comments your favourite, secret knowledge, and let’s deflate that insane AOL bubble of privileged bullshit information.

My teacher Manisha Mehta (Mumbai), in fact, told our group that even if someone copied the tape, it would be a “dead” tape, while tapes ‘blessed’ by guruji were “live” tapes. The difference between ‘dead’ tape and ‘live’ tape was that ‘dead’ tapes always played the same sequence while ‘live’ tapes kept themselves ‘modifying’ and ‘adjusting’ as per the mood and vibration of the group.

Today, I find it funny that I actually believed it for quite sometime! It was only after several years into AoL and attending hundreds of long kriyas that I realized what a big farce it was.

      Hahaha, self-editing tapes… that’s hilarious!

Sadly I would have probably rationalized that with some psuedo-physics and just ignored it if I had heard it when I was in AOL.

Folks this is funny. I work in the data storage industry where we develop operating systems, data storage and compression software. I would like to know if Guruji’s grace can work on influencing data blocks. Like if you have a sudarshan kriya mp3 in a storage device like ipod can guruji miraculously alter the data integrity of this mp3. Is guruji’s grace confined only to magnetic tape drives and not to digital data.

Another question, I downloaded the SK into my iphone yesterday. I usually carry my iphone most times even to toilets especially when travelling. One of the instructions in the SK manual is not to carry the SK tape to dirty places like toilets. Can any learned AOL teacher let me know what would be the karmic implications of carrying my phone to the toilet.

I remember when I had done the Basic course, my teacher had told me that Guruji knows each one of you who is sitting here… infact he has handpicked you all for the course. I used to naively believe this for many years 🙂 only to realize later how stupid it was!

Ravishankar is using Bawa to propogate doomsday teachings and create fear psychosis among his followers. I wrote to Bawa to stop this nonsense but he never bothered to post this message in his blog. I am attaching my post here so that people can see through this con.

    Sri Bawaji,

Ravishankar is creating unnecessary paronia. Eclipse times need not always be bad. Thats the time to awaken the sushmna and do higher sadhana. That apart the planetary movements have different effects on different people born in different rashis (moon signs), nakshatras and individual natal planetary positions. Ravishankar is aridra Nakshatra and Mithun (moon in gemini) rashi so he is obviously worried because eclipse happened in Mithuna nakshatra and Sun, Ketu and Moon are in Mithuna. But just because the time is not good for Ravishankar that doesn’t mean it is the same for others. On a generic note the period between now and navaratri is good in the material realm for people born with moon in Libra, taurus and aries. Travel can be good for them as well. There are many other individual parameters as well which will determine what the periods will do for individuals, both good and bad. It is not just black and white. Such apocalytic and grim statements from Ravishankar is not the vedic astrology way. These statements are not Jyothisha (the path of light) but ajnana (ignorance) and false inference.
Ravishankar is worried because after his best period of Shani maha dasha of 19 years which ended in 2009, he has entered into Mercury dasha for 16 years. mercury is not all that well placed for him and suggests a downfall. The kind of easy fame and ‘the famous for being famous’ without any stuff he attained will not continue for long. This is what is causing his paronia.
The exalted Sun in aries in his natal chart has created megalomania and excessive greed. This has blocked his ajna chakra very badly. The aspect of saturn on his venus is making him spend huge amounts of time in front of the mirror for his makeup. Such attachment to physical form does not bode well for a spiritual guru. Unless he can see through his through vichara and dhyana, he will continue creating fear psychosis amongst his disciples like you and others.
This particular message from ravishankar is a perfect example of doomsday paronia. It is a typical ploy used by many apocalyptic prophets. You can read up Jim Jones, David Koresh, osho, shoko ashara and others. Create a sense of fear and ask people to do sadhana and worship guru to overcome this false sense of fear. There is also a sales gimmick. He says everything will be fine after Navaratri, where people will pay huge amounts off money to attend those functions in his ashram. A Guru should be realistic. Just because the guru is sick the whole world is not sick. Ravishankar sees reality through his coloured glasses, that is what maya is. Mistaking a rope for a snake. Contemplate on vedanta and you will understand. Not the junk Ravishankar or mahesh yogi teaches but the actual one of upanishads progated by such great acharyas like sri shankara bagavadpada, Sri Ramanuja and Sri Madva.
Where will all this false teachings lead to. The next 3 months the aol followers will be scared like chicken and anything bad which happens in the world will strengthen their guru’s prophecy. Obviously there will be many things bad like accidents and natural calamities which will happen. THey happened earlier also, the tsunami, earthquakes and the plane crash in Mangalore two months ago where 180 people died. But you did not notice it because your guru did not give the dope to see it.

    Get real

I thought the SSRS warning meant I didn’t have to spend the $600+ for the “Blessings” course for Guru Purnima! Now do I have to rethink that, knowing that the warning is BS?

“You have no idea who RS is.”

We do – he is a fallen yogi – which is why you see both insight and bullshit coming from him. It’s not that tough to judge people by their actions. RS has no integrity, and his conduct is unbecoming of a spiritual master.

A guru does not bind people – he sets them free. He does not act like “I am enlightened” – that is only ego, which many a yogi falls into. He acts and thinks like “the mind”, “people in general” are stupid and need to follow his silly superstitions to lead a healthy life. It is a self fulfilling prophecy, which you see in AOL. Truth is that every one is capable of charting his own course – a true guru will awaken your intelligence – not blame it. He will clear your doubts if you have any, but not bind you in silly superstitions. The brand of spirituality that MMY, and RS propagate is very silly – and only suitable for a very low kind of mind which finds comfort in being part of a group and a system.

I agree to what Trayambakam Joshi said about Bawa. I have heard a lot about Bawa, he is an expert in influencing young generation.

One of his interesting preaching’s are “If a girlfriend or boyfriend says I cannot live without you, that means its time to run away from that relation”.

Love does not exist, its just sex, so enjoy and forget it. Most of the AOL teachers follow this as well. Since people come to them for their problems, its easy for them to catch hold of their prey.

Most important preaching in fact is “Live in present”. This is how they teach Art of Living by spoiling the mind of young generation by taking them away from emotions and feelings. Relations are becoming a matter of joke.

Slightly troubled by the title of this post.

I agree totally that AOL is wrong. But would like to post something about So-Ham mantra.

It is a beautiful concept. And it is not developed by SSRS but has been around since ages.

    (Content taken from Wikipedia)

So ‘ham in mystical interpretations suggests the identification or dissolution of the Ego with the “Other”: “That I Am”. When the “I” merges with the “That”, the ego of the “I” identity merges with the Other.

The meaning of the phrase might be expressed as follows: “I” am obviously not this body because the physical constituents of the body are changing every moment. Ultimately, the body dies. Atman the soul or self never dies – it is “That”.

    “That” is Absolute Reality.

    Prakash

Prakash is right. Title is not proper. So Hum Mantra is not personal property of Ravi. Its ancient mantra.

I think in this day and age, very few people in AOL, including teachers, really buy these superstitions that RS seems to love. But people go along, just because rules give them a framework to structure their lives (and the AOL course) – which does have it’s benefits. Plus who wants to live with awareness, when it’s much easier to blindly follow.

How is it developing confidence, when people are blaming their own mind all the time. How can you learn to trust your instincts when you are told, all the time your mind is a problem. A teacher’s job is to cultivate minds and develop it – not to put it down. Telling people not to trust their mind, but to trust these superstitions, leads to so much dissonance, any normal person will go crazy.

The essential lesson of vedanta is that what you are is eternal – so don’t be afraid to make mistakes. Go forth 100% – that’s the best way to grow. Develop your confidence through self-awareness and learning to listen and trust your soul. Superstition has little to do with spirituality. Unfortunately, in AOL it is superstition that rules.

I could care less if you don’t like a spiritual teaching or if you no longer like your former guru, but to do something like this is so despicable. You’re the type of guy who would post nude pictures of his girlfriend on the internet after he broke up with her. Get the point? What a jerk! You just royally fucked-up your karma and you don’t even know it. You don’t betray a spiritual teacher. Leave him, fine. Bad mouth him, not as fine, but still okay. But to publicly post his teaching material, beyond belief.

    • July 15, 2010 7:40 pm

Muckraker, you talk about betrayal. That is precisely what RS does: he betrays the faith and trust of his followers, creating dependence towards his person and organisation. RS is a Bad Guru, one of many, unfortunately, who give spiritual bondage in the guise of spiritual freedom. There are Good Gurus also. I have no problems with those, even though I do not agree with what they say.

As to karma, if I belived in it -which I don’t, it is just another way of enslaving people’s minds- I would have accumulated a lot of bad karma working for AOL, and this blog is my atonement. My way of making right, the wrongs I have done.

More people need to speak up, against fear-inducing superstition, authoritarian spiritual abuse, and religious cultism posing as a humanitarian organisation. That is truly despicable!

      Muckracker,

It’s really terrible to break promises! You are so right. So how will we hold HHSSRS accountable for the innumerable promises he has broken to so many sincere, innocent devotees? Let’s see. It must be okay in your books for a Guru to betray the trust and love of his innocent followers then? Just not okay for a deceived, used, abused devotee to publish some written material and a tape? Sigh — sometimes I think that AOL people have missed the whole basic course. There is just no I belong to you really in any of it — just lots of judgements and cruelty. You only hold people to promises that you feel are important. The promise of a Guru to guide and love the disciples has been broken over and over and over again by this man for no reason except his fear of exposure, his need for name and fame, and his monetary greed. Get real, get close, then come here and post how indignant you are about someone posting copyrighted materials. Copyrighted materials are nothing compared with the lost faith and peace of mind and lives and income and careers — losses caused by SSRS directly. The injuring of one human heart is so much more evil than the deceit of putting some legally protected document (which is supposed to be good for people, btw……..)up on the web.

You just don’t know what you are talking about, and so you should be held harmless in your insults to the SK notes poster. You still believe in something you are slightly involved with. If you knew what was going on, you’d be complaining about far worse things! The person posting the SK notes must have been injured indeed by SSRS to feel so betrayed as to put all of this up for all to see. I have no idea who it is who runs this blog and posted this, but again, I think that there are far greater deceptions, lies and cheating going on from the SSRS direction to the disciples/devotees and general public’s direction, not the other way around.

Why is posting SK notes or tapes an issue?

    Lets debate?

Is this affecting the AOL bussiness? TTC course will go bust ?
Is this devaluing the AOL business?
Is this affecting dollar /euro return?
Does this reduce the blind dumb global followership?

Why & How the fuck are you selling the ancient Indian vedas and teaching?
You can only fool for so long.

How are you guys different from Tony Robbins, Wayne Dyer, Deppak Chopra selling CD, books, meditation tapes? They have been shared unofficially by people who atteneded those to the people that they connect with and in various online sites.
AOL tapes books SK notes are no different than those and hold no higher extra- terrestrial powers than others. Feeling that way by AOL crowd would be ignorance combined with arrogance

Few lame ass reasons that are put out are,

Trust – People paid for it and they felt like sharing it now.
Service – AOL needs dollars for global service projects for good cause ? We have seen how the money have been channelled.
Karma – grace, curse, blessings are bullshit to threaten the weak and hold them hostage

And finally, one holds a secret only as long as they see some reason and truth in it. The moment that is gone, the cat will the out of the bag and the whole world will know it.
And this is what has happened and is happening to AOL especially due to blogs such as these where people have been openly sharing their experiences freely.

I think the same person is making most of these posts under different names. The style of writing is the same. I still think that you guys who post teaching materials are sorry bitches. What a bunch of little girls. Man-up. You justify what you’ve done because you think you’ve been betrayed so you can do anything now. What children! Also, you guys are long on opinion, but what about solid facts? All you do is bitch and moan and write sarcastic diatribes. Again, where are the facts?

You are right. Riddhi to whom you addressed the comment is a girl though I doubt she is little now. Whats wrong with being a girl?

Whats with this preoccupation with manliness ? The previous pro-AOL poster pompously announced that he was on the faculty at Stanford.

Speaking of facts, why don’t you just clarify SSRS”s education status for us? Did he really get an ADVANCED DEGREE IN PHYSICS at the age of 17? Can you release his education transcripts for all to see?

This is not a line by line translation of the transcript. But here you go:

Anchor : I am wearing this bulletproof vest because I teach Yoga and spread peace. People who teach Yoga and spread peace are nowadays target of shootouts. Just like my guru of AOL, SSRS was shot at. Though the police say that SSRS was not the target, SSRS insists he was. So, let us ask SSRS himself.

        SSRS enters.

        Anchor: Welcome baba-ji!

SSRS: I am not a baba. Because I don’t do those things which other babas do.
Anchor: OK. Recently, there was an alleged shootout in your Ashram. The police say that you were not the target.

SSRS: All lies. I was the target.

Anchor: But you spread message of peace and non violence. Why would anyone shoot at you?

SSRS: Gandhi-ji also taught peace and non violence. He was also attacked.

Anchor: So you are comparing yourself with Gandhi-ji?

SSRS: Gandhi-ji also did not get a Nobel Prize. I also did not. So, certainly, there is a similarity.

Anchor: But the police say that gun was fired at someone else. Some of your devotee.

SSRS: No. No. It’s a lie. They fired at ME.

(There is a gun firing sound in the background. SSRS flinches)

Anchor: But who can have enmity with you?

SSRS: Why? Terrorists, of course. They tried to kill me.

Anchor: Why would terrorists try to kill you?

SSRS: You see terrorists in the business of selling violence. I am in the business of selling non-violence. So there is an obvious clash.

Anchor: But terrorists say something else. We have a terrorist on line. Can I take his call?

SSRS: Yes. I am not afraid of terrorists.

(There is a gun firing sound in the background. SSRS flinches)

Terrorist looking Afghan: This fellow SSRS betrayed us. So we tried to kill him.

SSRS: See. I was the target!

Anchor: OK. OK. Please do not move your hands so much. Anyway, police say something else. However, if you insist so much, I believe that you were the target.

Terrorist looking Afghan: This fellow keeps on chanting Yoga, Yoga on every forum. But he is not a real yogi. Real yogi is baba Ramdev. You can see his body. This fellow keeps his body and his beer belly wrapped. Lift his kurta and you can see his beer belly.

        Some melee.

SSRS says something that sounds like “I fuck you all”.

Anchor clarifies that what SSRS actually said was “I forgive you all”.

I got not far into the Sudarshan Kriya notes when sure enough, up popped a good brainwash technique. A short note about why AoL is so superior in discussion of the technique:
“We are successful because we have all four factors; others may have only two or three”.

Excuse me, but who are “others”? Those “other” UNsuccessful people who know nothing of yoga?
“Other” spiritual teachers? “Other” spiritual groups? Anyone NOT in AoL?
All those people that AoL people are somehow above I suppose?
So much for oneness and we are all connected. I BELONG to you, oh, except, I have something you don’t have, you poor “other”.

WE are the chosen ones? Is that it? Better make sure to say that to keep the disciples feeling really, super special. GOLD stars for all good disciples!
When they feel special, as though they have something “other” people don’t have, they will certainly follow the Guru. Absolutely BRILLIANT brainwashing technique!
RS seems to separate his flock from “others”. I guess we are all just lesser beings. A great cult leader will isolate his followers so I give RS a GOLD star for being a stellar cult leader!

I am so glad to be able to direct this query at someone who knows Ravi and Astrology.I am pretty interested in Astrology myself and have tried deciphering Ravi’s chart. Of course, using birth time rectification. He has fantastic yogas – exhalted Jupiter- his AK, Sun, Parivartan yoga etc.etc. Also, strong indications of moksha from Lagna and moon point of view. Also, his D-60 shows he is born with fantastic karma. Planetary placement show big ego, greed and some sexual problems, tantric knowledge, desire for international recognition, as well as having no peace of mind….blahblahblah….so my question is – this man who is doing such obvious bad karma, as indicated by planets, how could he be heading for moksha? Which also pthe planets indicate. And such people – do they not know the repercussions of their actions? Love to get an Astro explanation on this one.
Sorry folks, for this complicated jargon:-)

Interesting how like “father”, like “son” — in this case, the similarities between Maharishi Mahesh Yogi and SSRS (although I confess I think MMY did a better job in many respects, he had many of the same failings, it seems). In the end of his life, Mahesh Yogi did not enter India or the USA. His body was taken to India after his death. If he had entered either country, he would have been arrested for tax evasion. And so he lived his life out on his estate in Holland, not visiting India or the US again. I wonder where his “son” will end up running away to? SSRS once commented that it is a terrible thing when a guru begins his decline while he is still living (he was referring to Mahesh Yogi). Now it appears that he is following his “father” even in that respect. Although he could control politics and police to this point, when crowds start to assemble in large numbers in India, as we see in the videos posted here, and the first crime is admitted to (the stealing of the farmer’s land which was given back by the police), it’s tough to get the parties to side with you for love or money. They worry about the votes. And so, perhaps things will change for the AOL scam after all, in spite of all the dirty dealings through the years. Maybe Arvind, Ajay and even old Narasimha may have to go get real jobs once the taxman raids their places, sees their cooked books, and takes them down. That would be Grace of God. Even for them. A person who has ill-begotten gains will never be truly happy. And so, to wish all of them true happiness, we can wish them all to be caught, pay out the cash, and be humble, without the benefit of all the laundered money and stolen land they acquired through HHSSRRSS. Donate that lovely piece of government land as a college for the poor, I say. Do some real service for a change. Teaching people how to breathe in and out in circles when they are hungry, under educated, and without a chance, just keeps them running in circles their whole lives. Do something useful and give it all away to the people, and have all the “devotees” work for free for the government, without any position of authority. Just simple servants of humanity. Let the locals go to school on the AOL campus. It’s very beautiful! Very lovely for a school.

      Well written especially,

“Teaching people how to breathe in and out in circles when they are hungry, under educated, and without a chance, just keeps them running in circles their whole lives.”

Kriya is not a life altering magic if you do it regularly. In fact it loses it potency with repeated use. If one runs around a park for 15 min with 3 different speeds, they will get the 3 circles.Hyperventilation through exercise and physical activity would be similar and equal to the kriya practice. It just is overrated and oversold by the AOL lites.
The biggest benefit it may bring in a person is some awareness when that is very slow to begin with but enslaving ones life and equating AOL, seva & HHSSRRSS to everything in this world and signing up for all courses and forcing pople to sign up for courses is STUPIDITY

What is this nonsense about “transforming the world”? How can AOL transform the world when their own world view is so completely warped by the cult of personality? I thought deep spirituality as taught by the true masters (zen and the likes) was to perceive reality for what it is, first and foremost. The change happens within. Then talk about “helping” others. I left AOL because most AOL-ites are living in some different reality and world view, pretending to smile and be joyous all the time because their magical guru sprinkles fairy-dust on them and keeps them safe and nice. WOW!! OMG!!

I just sat down to do Kriya to the MP3 and guess what? It actually had exactly the same effect as going to do Long Kriya in the group!!

I must say I’m somewhat a little confused. My Part 1 teacher insisted that the tape wouldn’t have any effect if played by itself and that a “qualified” teacher had to be there to take us through the sequence and then press the Play button.

I subsequently found out that in actual fact, a qualified teacher is one who has been “prepared” in such a way that they become an “instrument of the divine”, and that during the Long Kriya session it is actually the Grace of the Guru which flows through the teacher. The tape really has very little to do with it.

So, given that I am not a teacher, and there weren’t any teachers present in my bedroom or the surrounding area for some miles, I have to ask the obvious question:

HOW ON EARTH DID I GET THE FULL EFFECTS OF THE LONG KRIYA???

In fact, as I didn’t have to go through all the hassle of travelling to and from the center where we do our LK, I would go so far as to say I had an even better experience than I normally do. I can now chill out for the rest of the evening at home and do stuff I wouldn’t have had time to do otherwise.

If an AoL teacher is reading this, or anyone else who is in a position to explain this simple basic conundrum to me, I would really appreciate it.

Few things that are bad – accepting dogma as truth, being a sycophant, following teachers blindly. This is elementary stuff, but for some reason needs to be pointed out.

The length of the Long Kriya keeps on changing in different versions. This means that what has been copyrighted by AOL is in itself not consistent. How about creating a new audio in which the breathing should coincide with the words OSAAA….MAAA, OSAAA….MAAA. This tape should then be distributed all over the net. No one will be blessing this new audio for it to work. Let’s see whether it creates the same hyperventilation effects as SK.

This would achieve the following objectives

    1) Avoid getting into patent lawsuits with AOL.
    2) Prove that even Osama can create the same effects.
    3) Prove that Guru blessing is not required for it to work.
    4) Prove that divinity/spirituality is uniformly available for all souls and is a gift of nature to those who are interested.

I was a AoL follower too. The last event I attended was a part 2 course. AoL is indeed a cult. I was so brainwashed, that I did’t care about my friends and family anymore. I did’t care about my husband anymore, I had no social life, I neglected my responsibilities in the household and all of my spare time and energy I had devoted to RS. I woke up, when my dad interfered after my husband asked him to, because he couln’t handle me anymore. I started to get doubts after dad made me look at my life, and made me see how lonely I had become, and how empty my life had become. He said it is upto you, if you go on in this way, you’ll push everyone who loves and cares for you away forever. I wrote a mail to RS with questions and asked for advise. That was 2009. I never got an reply. After I had sent the mail, I started to become alive again. I resent that period of my life and I am ashamed that I had been so instable and weak. Now I absolutely resent everything about AoL. It is scary, creapy, sad all at the same time. It’s sad to se how many weak souls there are on earth. The prevailing emotion, however is shame.

      @Nancy,

Happy to know that you saw the light, thanks to your father in law! At least you didn’t lose more time on this. Feeling ashamed was the first thought I had as well. I felt so foolish that I’d been so involved in something that should have been obviously wrong to me in the first place! But AOL and it’s leader are experts in manipulation, in explaining ‘doubts’ away. And if the doubts continue, then you become persona non grata at the very best for them. It’s a vicious, hypocritical group of people, many of whom joined when they were in their 20s, and are now in their 40s and 50s and have no place else to go. They’d never get a job anywhere, so they are afraid to leave. I’ve heard several of the “old timers” even say so! “Where else would I go? What can I do now?” feeling, rightly that they had thrown their lives away in their naivety. But that’s what it is — being naive that sucks us into such a thing. The one who should be ashamed is Ravi Shankar, not you. Congratulations again on getting your life back.

        Thank you dear anonymous,

You know, I needed something to release stress. That was why I joined in the first place. I did learn yoga there and I learned to meditate. I do those things on my own now (not AoL meditations) and practise Hinduism actively. Because of this, I was able to let go of things that were draging me down. I made so many advancements in one and a half year, that I was not able to make in the ten years before.

Followers need to understand this: Hinduism, yoga and meditations can do wonders, but you don’t need AoL and certainly no fake guru to practise these.

        Bye.
