Manipulation Through “Knowledge”

Btw Doc .. I picked up the Daily Knowledge sutras book today to look for any visible signs for manipulations and I think I did come up with something..
When I read the 1st Knowledge sheet(June 21, 1995. Big Sur, California)
“This begins a new practice” … the 2nd last line of which says “Maya – delusion – is when you are stuck in events, personalities, or objects. Brahman – divine conciousness is seeing beyond all these ” ..
I was like wow this such a beautiful line. . surely this line clears a lot of things ..
.. but then when I opened the second knowledge sheet thats when I felt a little agitation ..
“Close to the master” 1st line of which says “If you are not feeling close to the master, its because of you – because of your mind, your ego concepts.” ..
immediately I realized where did the Guru chasing arise from. Yes Guru chasing was there back in the 80s too. But then there were not that many devotees and darshan used to be much more personal. I feel this is the sheet in which all the being close to the master thing arose…
The stage for competition to being close to the Guru was set.. so now the devotees to prove their spiritual growth had to seem close to the Guru.. and the Guru speaks more to the teachers than the volunteers.. he meets the teachers individually and the volunteers in a group.. he meets the devotees in even larger groups.. amongst teachers he gives more adoration to the teachers who teach the biggest courses.. etc etc
Hence the stage for getting more and more people was in the hands of the Guru .. the Guru had a chance to set up competition for probably giving better darshan to the person who helped the most people, who did some great random acts of kindness… but unfortunately the stage seemed setup for who gets the maximum people to the organization
In the second knowledge sheet (June 21, 1995. Big Sur, California) goes on to say further…
Q. When you play games with us and push us away, how can we feel close to you?
Sri Sri: You should feel more close if you are scolded or ignored, because to ignore somebody takes a lot of effort. When a master does not even ignore a wrapping paper or a flower in a vase, how can he ignore a walking, talking, breathing human being who is connected to him? Once you understand this you immediately feel close.
Torre: Can we call you every week?
Kenny: Call Guruji** every week, and if he doesn’t answer the phone, then you know you are loved!

** People around the world commonly address Sri Sri as Guruji(honored teacher)
Two things .. 1st is that convieniently the stage has been set up for multiple followers… even if you are ignored then the master loves you more.. hence no need to give personal darshans anymore … just ignore and the devotees will think the master loves them,. crave for more intimate interaction.. do more seva i.e. get more people n all … etc etc
2nd thing is that this knowledge sheet establishes him as “Guruji” the honored teacher…
The 3rd Knowledge sheet was on Sanchita, Prarabhdha karma.. didn’t see any manipulation and was about to move on when I saw a small “*” near the last line
And Satsang* burns the seed of all negative karmas before they are even given a chance to sprout.

*Company of the master, also refers to a group of people who come together to celebrate the knowledge
Now in this 3rd knowledge sheet the stage has been set up for the Satsang and deitification of the Guru, since now a group will form together to celebrate Satsang, the photo is going to be of the Guru, and obviously bhajans will be sung and hence people will feel high, they will associate the power of the mantras(including the Guru mantras) with the photo present in the satsang, hence the stage was set up for Sri Sri Ravi Shankar to become a divine avataar who has come up to relieve many of their negative karmas (I would like to add that I still love the bhajans and the satsangs , I am sure many of us do, but don’t visit them anymore). I kind of like Sri Sri becoz he makes people chant the name of the divine but then I also hate him coz he takes all the credit of being the divine himself. The positive I see is people chanting together and the negative is that somebody gets deified.
I would like to mention that I love the songs and the bhajans played at Art of Living, but then the question again arises can spirituality be judged by the mere sounds. If that was the criteria then Michael Jackson would have been the most spiritually enlightened person on the planet.
I could study three sheets today the first was really good and clean but No 2 seemed highly manipulative and No 3. was an extension of that manipulation. And its amazing how such a small little manipulation can catapult an organization and a human to such a huge scale .. 1995 weekly knowledge sheet started and 1996 onwards AoL really started picking up momentum ..
If there is somebody who was there during the 80s and during these times when the weekly knowledge thing started can probably shed more light on this subject, would request them to share their experiences and we can know whether the manipulation is introduced in the book or was there right from the start?

Beyond The Art of Living 
The most powerful lies are those that are 99% truth. The statements in the knowledge sheets are true if the term “The Master” refers to the unsullied, witness consciousness that is the core of everyone. In AOL, it refers to the person of Ravi Shakar and thus the circus is perpetuated.
This is a very good point, zhoro. And, btw, is one known well by Ravi Shankar. When people leave him, he will take little facts about them, and then add 99% lies to those facts. People listening know the facts are true, and so don’t suspect that he is lying or defaming the individual that is being gossipped about. It’s really an evil thing. For example, person xyz is known by everyone to have done their shopping in town on a particular day. Ravi Shankar might would say “xyz went shopping as is his usual thing on Mondays, as you all know, and that is where he did this terrible, awful, unthinkable thing. xyz is just so disturbed! We should avoid xyz at all costs.” People listening are too stupid to realize that 99% of what RS just said is a lie about person xyz. He does this consistently, and with apparent malice, wanting to actually hurt reputations, and destroy friendly connections between people who leave his organization and friends they made there. Sick Sick Sick. I’ve seen it done, and had it done to me as well. Only when someone is extremely close to person xyz, will they see through the lie. And those people invariably leave when they realize how mean and nasty this “master” can be when crossed.
Thanks a million, OA. For me, owing to personal reasons, this is one of the most significant posts on this blog. I cannot begin to tell you how this “knowledge” trickled into my universe through someone I believed in more than I believed in myself, and ripped apart my universe. If I could, I’d take AoL to court on the content of these “knowledge sheets” alone. The harm that they have caused me is immeasurable. I have yet to recover from having my mind ransacked by the contradictory content contained in these “knowledge sheets” — it’s only after studying how brainwashing is accomplished that I realized that contradiction is at the heart of brainwashing — the idea is to make people helpless by confusing them — so that they have to lean on someone — for an interpretation — and then the person one leans on — destroys one’s mind — one’s sense of oneself — one’s confidence — one’s faith — and then plants anything that person wishes in one’s head. Usually, these are delusional ideas — such as in the Torre instance that you’ve quoted. I can’t even believe that I bought any of it — but I did — I bought all of it. Now I know that “brainwashing” is the trade secret of AoL and I sincerely hope that Skywalker’s lawyer demystifies the process through which AoL accomplishes it — whenever an opportunity presents itself in court.

I think we must have a page(Probably called post your evidence ) where we can post something which is concrete evidence .. .sometime back I read somebody had dug out something about Invitex pharma where the narsimhans had a share … something like this .. so that if ever one of us decides to go and sue in the court we have some evidence to back us up …

Back to topic at hand… this is an excellent post. As many have pointed out, the knowledge points are mostly good, but you have to take away the Guru part and replace it with honoring God/divine/nature (whatever you believe) instead.

Relax Mangal ….. Your comment is biased / judgmental and chauvinistic. Everyone should be allowed their perspective. While you are entitled to yours. However, I think you kinda crossed the line here…because there are somethings that are best kept to oneself. What makes you an expert on VSS or on her Ex ? Just because you read a few lines of what she wrote…that too incompletely ? ….do make your point …but you don’t have to speculate and write hurtful stuff as you did above. How can you know ? I joined AOL in 1990. When I joined the guru devotion was already there. It was very sweet and personal. SSRS was very accessible. Guru adoration is a Hindu tradition and I think it works fairly well if there is the give and take of a personal relationship. It was my observation that the give and take of a personal relationship kept the excessive craziness of guru adoration in check in the early days. As the organization got bigger that give and take wasn’t able to happen. The guru became mythologized in people’s minds. Once that started to happen all kind of craziness started to happen. The competition for “Daddy’s” attention and favor became a major dynamic within the group. From that need for love and approval sprung a thousand dysfunctions.
In looking back, I don’t fault SSRS for those dysfunctions. They were all devotee generated. What I fault him for is not addressing these dysfunctions more directly and mitigating their impact. He did it half-heartedly and the 2nd knowledge sheet was an attempt to do that. When it said, “If you are not feeling close to the master, its because of you – because of your mind, your ego concepts.” he was trying to make the point that whether you are close physically to the master or not you can be close to the master by dropping this idea of separation. This was to help those who weren’t close to feel close to him. It was an attempt to curb the jealousy and competition. It didn’t really work.
Where he made a mistake, in my opinion, was that he still supported the myth that the guru is God and without any flaw or defect. As long as this idea was promoted (whether passively or actively), you will get excessive competition and dysfunction. Who doesn’t want to be close to perfection, to God? And who isn’t going to do everything in their power to get God’s approval?
SSRS keeps the myth of the guru alive and well in his organization. As a result, he can’t help but have a very dysfunction organization. By doing that, he paints himself into a very dysfunctional corner. Unfortunately, I don’t think he sees his part in it very clearly. Until he does, his organization will continue to fall further and further into destructive cult-dom.
He actually encouraged the ‘chasing’ behaviors you describe and many of us witnessed, and even participated in. He wants people to chase him around. He loves it. It’s really sick. And that dysfunction is not the only nor the worst dysfunction he and the organization has. Because I do not wish to be sued for “defamation” (I would be telling the truth, but why would he care?) I cannot go into any detail, but from the very beginning, Ravi Shankar was not who he seemed or claimed to be. I know this from people very close to me who corrected my misperceptions, and explained what he had done to them. It was truly sad. At first I didn’t believe them, and then, as he began to mistreat and judge me, I realized they were correct. All of us eventually left. Those who stayed behind are the most disturbed people I’ve ever met.
Once we were all told by the senior teachers that we should sit orderly and be very disciplined when guruji comes to give darshan. so we followed the instructions. And guruji came and seeing us sitting in an orderly manner said, “so there will be no chaos, no fun”. He did not like us behaving in a disciplined manner. He wanted to be ‘chased’ by people. And suddenly the crowd became chaotic.
He wantonly encourages ‘chasing’ as that is his way of informing about his celebrity status to the new comers. And also to keep the old timers interested in him.
People brag about their ‘talking to guruji’ or special attention bestowed on them by guruji in the aol circles. And the newbies in the aol circle imagine him to a superhuman being and think of having similar experiences so that they too can brag in their circle. So the ‘chasing’ thing filters down to the local satsang centers.
Did anyone watch HHSSRS’ Happy birthday celebrations? One of the teachers announced on the Happy occasion that Our beloved Gurudev can now be followed on twitter. The teacher somehow forgot to mention about Facebook. So our loving Gurudev promply added that he could be followed on Facebook too.
So Sangatchatvam! come lets all move together with the BIG MIND 🙂

The above is some truth behind some of what happens on facebook. Is it really worth it ? Is it harmless to some and harmful to just a few ?
Its time to be alert. This AOL networking site is going to be no different in terms of wanting to exploit. Except in this case, a handful of people control you…its not an open system such as facebook. “You can join only by invitation”.
For those of you who think that there are very limited such happenings…..you may be shocked to know the real numbers. A much publicized and wel made program says 53% of India’s kids have been sexually molested. Over 50% of them are male kids. Watch Aamir Khan’s Satyameva Jayate on Star Plus. The numbers are mind boggling and extremely shocking. While shocking, the case studies are also immensenly educational and well done. By no means, am I implying AOL is into Child Abuse or anything remote.
I am making a general statement that SOCIAL MEDIA Platforms are an open invitation to be exploited. This AOL social media platform is no different in the sense of the future potential to exploited. Do also think about the below
1. What can be AOL’s express intent behind building it ?
2. Why reinvent the wheel ? They could have just used Facebook … No ? But then with facebook you don’t control the messages and the content and the database. And anybody can say anything. You want a controlled environment.
3. Check facts about facebook…its cost 10s of millions of dollars to develop the software and host it.
4. Why then should AOL do their own thingie ? That too when your recent marketing events all lost a lot of money (Berlin).
5. Even if you did not spend 10s of millions, you would have spent at least 1 million dollars setting up the same ? That means you feel that there is a tremendous need to have this. Did all your devotees ask for it ? Or did you conceive of it…so you can keep track of your devotees ?
6. SriSri is enlightened…he can keep track of you anytime anywhere. So, is this for the less enlightened 2nd tier to keep track of the flock ?
7. Whose idea was this ?
8. Who funded this ?
9. What is the rationale behind the effort ?
Devotees Beware —..This is a very dangerous and even parasitic control mechanism …it is a pretty desperate and exploitative development if you ask me.

I can feel it in your words .. it has been my experience too.. whenever there have been very few people around him those kinds of darshans have been very sweet . . even till very late .. but those kinds of moments are now kind of hard to come by ..
Do you think he could be teaching somebody something? Or has he lost it ?
Do you think he has a bigger vision in the world which is why he has to ignore his sincere disciples and focus on the rowdies ?
I heard about some 1999 thing from a senior teacher .. that those who have come to him on or before 1999 are really a part of him/will be enlightened/etc( I have heard quite a few versions). That teacher was basically bragging about having done the course before 1999.
Guru worship is a very common thing in India and its very beautiful too, but only when its a Guru – Disciple relationship .. when it becomes something like a celebrity – fan relationship then things can get really messy esp for the sincere ones ..
LOL @ the idea that any of the senior teachers will ever be anything like enlightened! First they have to stop being abusive, cruel and stop throwing tantrums over small things. I read this and laughed, knowing some of them too well. They live in a bubble of fantasy.
Sounds like you would be happy as a clam if these senior teachers had treated you with the respect you deserve. Sounds like you are still very hurt and you are lashing out anonymously through this online forum. What did they do to you that hurt you so badly that you cannot get past it?

Some karma can be changed and some cannot.
When you prepare halwa, if sugar is less or ghee is less, water more or less, it can all be adjusted, repaired. But once soji is cooked, it cannot be reversed.
If the buttermilk is sour, milk can be added, salt can be added to make it drinkable. But it can never be reversed back to milk.
Prabdha karma cannot be changed. Sanchita karma can be changed by spiritual practices. Satsang burns the seed of all negative karma.
When you praise someone, you take on their good karma. When you blame someone you take on their bad karma.
Know this and surrender both good and bad karma to the Divine and be free.
My humble observations about the above:

Why do you care why VSS posts here? When I’m very busy and see one of her long posts, I just skip through it. Nobody requires me to read it. Yes, her experience is limited in Art of Living, but it happened to her, and imagine how many thousands of others could be saved deeper involvement by seeing that he/she got out (why does everyone say ‘she’? Do they know this person?) If all that is accomplished is that VSS gets to talk in a sympathetic environment about the bad experience of AOL, it’s enough. Why are people bashing this person? I couldn’t care less the lenght of the posts.
How is it helping people if they can download the supposedly harmful SK from this site? Seems hypocritical to me. Makes me question her true motives. Feels more like revenge.

In a nutshell yes. I am from a different cult but we were brainwashed in exactly the same way.

These were my obersvations of those teachers, not my experience of them. I listened to their complaints (a lot), how they had no where else to go, how overworked they are, blah blah blah. I didn’t want their respect, as you put it. They didn’t do anything to me. But they were rude and horrible to others quite often. They threw immature tantrums over the slightest possible, even imagined hurt from other teachers. They were competitive with each other. I found it disgusting and not at all spiritual. So I left. The strangest thing was that SSRS himself never did anything to stop their behaviors, and, in fact, indulged in those behaviors himself.
